After graduating from Emory University, one of its leading students and athletes, Christopher McCandless, leaves all his possessions, gives the 24,000 dollars accumulated during his studies to a charity fund, and hitchhikes to Alaska to immerse himself in the wild. According to Sean Penn himself, he went to the shooting of this film for almost ten years. He read Krakauer's book in one night in 1996, after which he immediately began negotiations with McCandliss's parents about making it into a film. However, when everything was ready for filming, the parents refused. This is the first film directed by Sean Penn, where his wife Robin Wright Penn did not play. The moose that Christopher killed in the movie was actually found dead in Alaska. Davy Chase auditioned for the role of Tracy, but didn't get it.
