California high school students Bill and Ted realize too late that their dreams of a rock band are dashed if they fail a history exam and report on "The Modern World Through the Eyes of a Prominent Historical Person." Fortunately for school rockers, they are helped by Rufus - a messenger from the future in a time machine. With her help, Bill and Ted not only travel in the past, but also transfer many historical figures from there.
