Dickie Eklund is the pride of the Irish residents of the working-class neighborhoods of Lovell, Massachusetts, a boxer who dreams of a championship belt and has every chance for it. In the shadow of Dick's glory lives Mickey - his brother and sparring partner, who, it seems, has nothing to dream of anything more than handing the champion a gun. However, after suffering a humiliating championship loss to Ray Leonard, Dickey descends into the darkness of drug addiction, alcoholism and violence, eventually ending up in prison. Miki, in desperation, enters the ring, trying to save his family from poverty.
